Cobblestone November/December 2013 (COB1311):
When you think of a southern plantation, what do you see? A wealthy family living on a large estate where many enslaved people provide the labor? Well, that's only part of the picture. While enslaved people did make up a good portion of the southern population, the largest plantation owners represented less than five percent of that society. Most southern plantations were much smaller. Known as middling plantations, the family farmers who lived and worked on them were the backbone of southern colonial life. Join Cobblestone this month for a more complete look at southern plantation society.
