What do First Lady Edith Wilson, novelist Edith Wharton, performer Elsie Janis, and sculptor Anna Coleman Ladd have in common? They all were women who used their positions and skills to show support to the soldiers and the victims of World War I. And they were not the only ones who invested their time, money, or talents to the effort. Women during the early 1900s were expected to devote their lives to being wives and mothers. But when World War I started in Europe in 1914, the urge to help was strong. Women volunteered as nurses, worked as switchboard operators, enlisted in the Navy. They served their country in any way they could and their sacrifices and successes changed how women were perceived after the war.
